A content management system (CMS) is a computer application that supports the creation and modification of digital content using a common user interface and thus usually supporting multiple users working in a collaborative environment.

CMS are very popular these days. They are used to build web sites, mainly blogs and online shopping sites. Although these products provide a good solution for building web sites, they are not the only "true" solution. Sometimes they will fit and sometimes a custom design will be more adequate.
